MARTA DEVELOPING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR H.E. HOLMES STATION MASTER PLAN

ATLANTA – The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) is working with the community to re-envision the 22 acres of land surrounding the H.E. Holmes rail station in west Atlanta. MARTA launched the H.E. Holmes Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Master Plan to address the station’s potential to leverage transit in a way that can bring a diverse mix of land uses to create new neighborhood scale development.

Community input is a critical component of the H.E. Holmes TOD Master Plan. Public events and an interactive project website have attracted interested community members to voice their opinions and share their vision and priorities throughout the process. A series of two virtual community exploration sessions hosted in early February resulted in nearly 200 RSVPs and robust discussions about the future of the H.E. Holmes site. Attendees resoundingly expressed the need for higher quality retail such as a grocery store, as well as improved infrastructure such as better sidewalks, street lighting, and roads.

Reactions to three potential layout ideas varied with many favoring communal green spaces, higher density housing options in strategic locations, and diverse sports offerings for young people. Those who were unable to attend viewed a recording and provided feedback in an online survey that closed at the end of February that garnered close to 120 responses.

The project team will incorporate public feedback into the design concepts and will return to the community on Tuesday, March 28, at the C.T. Martin Natatorium and Recreation Center for a final public meeting. At this meeting, attendees will learn more about the draft recommended site layout concept and will have an opportunity to speak one-on-one with the project team to provide feedback that will be incorporated in the final master plan.
