Rail Mean Distance Between Failures

Definition: Measures the mean distance (rail car miles) between mechanical failures reportable to National Transit Database, i.e., those precluding a rail car from completing its trip or starting its next scheduled trip.

Performance (December 2018):

In December, did not meet the Target; the actual being 20,756 rail car miles. ATC, doors and friction brakes continue to malfunction the most.

Actions:

  1. Continue targeting poorly performing systems for improvement
  2. Reduce repeat failures
  3. Improve incident management in service to reduce offloads
