MARTA Accessibility Committee (MAC)

MARTA Accessibility Committee Announcement

Chairperson of MARTA’s Accessibility Committee

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) is seeking candidates to fill the Chairperson position for the MARTA Accessibility Committee (MAC). The MAC is an advisory committee made up of citizens and advocacy agencies representing seniors and various disabilities in the MARTA service area. The committee meets to discuss and recommend solutions to transportation-related issues for both seniors and persons with disabilities. MARTA is seeking a proven leader who will be able to work closely with the Authority, Advocacy Groups, and the community to ensure that seniors and individuals with disabilities, have a voice in the decision making process as it relates to public transportation. This is an unpaid, volunteer position with term ending on December 31, 2018.

Role of the Chairperson: This position plays a key role as with any voluntary committee. The Chairperson must ensure the committee functions properly; there is full participation during meetings; all relevant matters are discussed; and effective decisions are made and conveyed to the Authority. The role of the Chairperson can be time-consuming, with work between meetings, external representation of the Committee, and work with the MARTA staff. Chairing an ADA-focused committee requires a high degree of diplomacy and leadership. The responsibilities of the Chairperson can be summarized under four areas:

  1. Provide support to the Authority - In consultation with the Executive Director of Diversity and Equal Opportunity, the Chairperson must establish and confirm an agenda for each meeting.

While the bylaws may specifically outline the exact role, the Chair must attend individual sub-committee meetings, when invited, or as time permits. In doing so, the Chair not only remains informed, but can offer advice and insights.

Key Attributes

  • Strong organizational and leadership skills with experience leading meetings
  • Strong communication skills, both written and public speaking
  • Community-focused individual with extensive management experience
  • Extensive project management skills: setting of goals, target, timelines, and key decision points
  • Keen interest and previous involvement in working with seniors and individuals with disabilities
  • Networking and relationship-building

Deadline: Interested candidates must email a résumé and a letter of interest to David Scarbor, ADA Coordinator, at, by October 12, 2016 at 5:00 pm. Questions about the position should also be directed to Mr. Scarbor at 404-848-4037.
