Chief Wanda Y. Dunham has more than three decades of experience with transportation law enforcement, and she has led MARTA’s Police Department since May of 2006. Under her direction, MPD has distinguished itself as one of the top law enforcement agencies in the country, receiving consecutive Gold Standard Awards from both the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Baseline Assessment for Security Enhancement.
She was appointed as Chief of Police and promoted to Assistant General Manager in May of 2006, making her the first African American and female to hold this position. She made history again in September 2018, when she was promoted to MARTA’s C-suite as Chief of System Safety, Security, and Emergency Management/Police Chief.
Chief Dunham earned a BS degree in Criminal Justice from Jacksonville State University and graduated with honors with a Master of Arts degree in Public Administration from Columbus State University. Chief Dunham has received numerous awards and national recognition for her work in the community and accomplishments in law enforcement. Chief Dunham has recently been awarded the Pinnacle Award for leadership by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Some of Chief Dunham’s professional affiliations consist of the Atlanta METROPOL, where she served in many capacities including Chair on the Executive Board. Chief Dunham serves on the Board of Directors for the Atlanta High Intensity Drug Task Force Association (HIDTA), and the Fulton County Public Safety Training Center (FCPSTC). Chief Dunham was selected by the National Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to serve on the Peer Advisory Committee which acts as a liaison between TSA and the top 20 transit authorities. She is a member of the Public Safety Security Advisory Committee for the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). She is an active participant with FTA/TSA Security Roundtable Advisory Committee; as well as a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) and the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police (GACP).
Chief Dunham has demonstrated her ability to reduce the incidence of crime, effectively lead officers under her command and systematically make a difference in the operation of the MARTA Police Department.
