MARTA INTERIM GM/CEO TESTIFIES AT U.S. SENATE COMMITTEE ON BANKING, HOUSING, AND URBAN AFFAIRS
ATLANTA – Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) Interim General Manager and CEO Collie Greenwood today testified at the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs during an open session hearing entitled, “Advancing Public Transportation Under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.”
Other witnesses were Joanna M. Pinkerton, President and CEO, Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA), Greg Regan, President, Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO (TTD), Dr. Dorothy Moses Schulz, Ph.D., Adjunct Fellow, The Manhattan Institute, and Randal O’Toole, Director, Thoreau Institute.
Greenwood shared with the committee MARTA projects that are advancing due to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) such as Clayton Southlake Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), that recently entered the Project Development phase of the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Capital Investment Grant (CIG) Program as a Small Starts Project. Georgia Senators Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock secured a key change in the law that allowed this project to be eligible for the Small Starts Program.
Greenwood also highlighted MARTA’s zero emission buses that will be put on the street this spring, and the transformation of Five Points rail station. MARTA will be seeking a RAISE (Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity) grant and new discretionary grants to support the $150 million transformative project that includes removing the large canopy over the station to allow for the development of two mixed-income housing towers in the heart of downtown Atlanta.
Greenwood was named Interim General Manager and CEO of MARTA in January, previously serving as Deputy General Manager of Operations and Urban Planning and Chief of Bus Operations and Urban Planning. He began his career in transit as a bus operator in Toronto, in Ontario, Canada, eventually becoming Chief Service Officer at the Toronto Transit Commission, North America’s third largest transit system.
