MARTACONNECT AVAILABLE TO
BUS ROUTE 183 CUSTOMERS IMPACTED BY SERVICE SUSPENSION
ATLANTA
_ The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) will offer Uber and
Lyft trips through its MARTAConnect Program to customers of Route 183 along
Niskey Lake Road who are impacted by the upcoming bus service suspension.
On
Saturday, April 22, MARTA will temporarily suspend service on Niskey Lake Road
north of Campbellton Road after a safety investigation concluded the road was
too narrow for buses to operate safely. MARTA recorded three bus collisions in
2022 along that stretch of road and heard from customers and drivers about
other close calls. There were other concerns noted including vehicles parked
along the road, construction vehicles, and heavy traffic from Bunche Middle
School.
Beginning
this Saturday, April 22 at 5:30 a.m., impacted customers may scan the QR code
provided on signs at the Barge Road Park & Ride and at affected bus
stops, and on notices delivered to their homes to access MARTAConnect for trips
to and from the Barge Road Park & Ride and the Niskey Lake Loop.
MARTAConnect will be available from 5:30 a.m. until 12:30 a.m. Monday through
Friday and from 5:30 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and can be used
for two trips per day.
MARTA
has notified the City of Atlanta about the service suspension and recommended
several options to accommodate safe passage of buses along Niskey Lake Road
including:
- Widening the existing Niskey
Lake Road right-of-way of 20 feet to 24 feet
- Providing pull off areas along
the alignment
- Removing any near curb signs,
utility poles, or items near to the vehicle envelope
- Installing flashing beacons
that alert drivers to oncoming large vehicles
- One-way directional pairing of
Niskey Lake Road and County Line Road
- Restricting on street parking
for all vehicles, including construction vehicles
