MARTA ARTBOUND SEEKS COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT FOR

EAST LAKE STATION MURAL

Show-and-Tell Events Turn Neighborhood History to Art

ATLANTA – The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) public art program Artbound wants residents of Kirkwood, East Lake and Oakhurst to help create a new mural at East Lake Station this weekend.

Artbound is working with Living Walls and Argentinian artist Nicolás Romero Escalada (aka Ever) to produce a mural at the station that reflects the landscape and history of the communities surrounding it.

“Ever begins his site-specific artworks with an almost anthropological investigation, using symbols that represent economic, social, and cultural aspects of a neighborhood,” said MARTA Arts Administrator Katherine Dirga. “Community members from Kirkwood, East Lake and Oakhurst are invited to bring objects and stories that represent the landscape and history of their neighborhoods that will allow the artist to create a mural that generates points of connection.”

"These points of connection will represent a cross-section of the anthropology of Kirkwood, East Lake and Oakhurst. The project relies on interaction as a mechanism for generating meaning. The observer completes the construction of the piece when they enter into dialogue with the elements and items that are from their own daily life,” said Ever.

Residents of Kirkwood, East Lake and Oakhurst are invited to share their stories and meet the artist at two events this weekend:
